Assignment 2

Hi everyone, I'm just going to post up my abstraction process and the one i chose.

Not sure if this is what they were looking for..

please give comments cos i'm not really sure what to do!

Anyway i picked Lindsay Lohan and Amy Winehouse. They're in a capsule that represents drugs.

These are the original photos:

This is my outline:

And this is my abstraction process:

1. I developed the 1st photo by drawing out Lindsay and Amy (as above) and placing them in my concept. Both of them are known for abusing drugs, and I used a capsule to illustrate that.

2. I took out details like highlights and made the skin colour all equal.

3. I took out more details like the strands of hair, necklace on Amy, and changed their shirts to be one colour.

4. I focused on just their faces cos they're still pretty recognisable.

5. I changed the colour of the pill to white and grey, and the red sign to black.

6. I took the features of Lindsay and Amy and used black, white and grey.

I like the 4th one the most but of course if it can't be in colour then i'd have to do something about it. Thats a bit tricky though..

If not I'd have to pick the last one but I'm afraid you can't really tell its Lindsay and Amy.

Anyway I'll update this post later on. I just wanted to post up what i did.

I'm probably gonna edit the 4th one.. probably will draw the nose as a line instead and tweak it a little to fit black, white and another colour. hope it works.

Okay so I made a few minor adjustments here and there. Because I didn't realise all the abstractions had to be in black and white already, and the only one with colour was the final piece.

My conceptual statement, using Lindsay Lohan and Amy Winehouse, is to say no to them, say no to drugs.

My abstraction process:

This is my chosen prototype and I included a placement for it:

Class Exercise C

Photo that i chose.

This is my design process.

Class Exercise B

Description – Dettol hand sanitizer, things children touch (soft toys, books, crayons, coins, animals, toys, paint), a hand shaped out of multiple childrens' hands & the things they touch

• Analysis – Relationship between the product (Dettol) and target audience (parents), using a child's hand to represent childrens' curiosity and their likelihood of being in contact with germs

• Interpretation – Raising the awareness of the need for hygiene as children are constantly exposed to germs

• Judgment – Successfully brings the message across, appeals to target audience

Assigment 1

For the 1st assignment, we had to draw 4 sketches and pick 2 roughs to colour. I don't really like drawing so don't expect anything great. and I also don't use blogspot so I hope this turns out ok.

Anyway during lecture we were told to think of something that represents us and incorporate it to illustrate our name. Vanessa isn't an easy name to work with but anyway, I wrote a few things; ballet, shoes, clothes, butterflies, horses.. Then I thought, it didn't have to be exactly the things I like, so I added a fan and city landscape to the list. I'll explain why I chose them later.

So the 4 that I picked to draw were the ballerina, city landscape, theme park and fan.

I chose a ballerina cos I love dancing. It's something I've been doing all my life and I'd definitely choose dance school over uni if I wasn't in Singapore. But anyway. So I love dancing and trying my best to keep going at it now even with school..

I liked this drawing but you can't really see my name clearly. The arms are the V, A is the hardest to see, I didn't really manage to figure that out, but it's supposed to be her head, N is the back of her leotard, ESS is part of the design of the tutu and the last A is her legs.

Some classmates suggested developing this and putting her in context, on a stage. And maybe changing it to ballerina's spelling out my name, so each letter is one ballerina and make them do movements instead. But I chose something else, so I didn't develop it further :)

I drew the city landscape because I like being busy and that's what the buildings represent; Busy life and achievement. And skyscrapers look nice at night with all the lights anyway.

I didn't pick this either because I thought it was too simple and my name wasn't very well integrated into the buildings. And I think skyscrapers are also quite common.

I like theme parks and especially roller coasters. They're super fun and you get excited and scared just before you go and you feel the adrenaline and get to scream while you're on it. Theme parks are always fun and it reminds me of my childhood :)

And finally the fan. I decided to use the old fashioned fan that all grandmothers use. It kind of represents my grandma, who's peranakan and always using it with her kebaya (and no they don't wear kebaya's everyday, just maybe CNY). And I like the fan because it reminds me of my grandma, who lives with me btw.

Another reason why I chose this fan is because I actually don't really like air-conditioning. haha. Of course on super hot days I'd die without it. But I live without air-con so most of the time, I really love the fan.

This was one of my options.

Some comments:
Half of the class liked this. But some said that it looks a bit forced.

I also developed the fan and changed it a little bit so it has some detail. And adding colour makes it much easier to see.

I wasn't sure at first if this design was alright because my name seemed like it was 'engraved' into the fan instead of being part of the fan.

Some comments from classmates:
The other half preferred the fan. It's something unique and someone said that it's nice that I incorporated my Peranakan culture.

I experimented and tried using flowers on illustrator. Not sure how to make it follow the folds now.. and make it more oriental...

Anyway I'll show it in class this week. Hopefully this looks alright then I probably have to neaten it up and refine it further.

This was how it looked after putting it in illustrator.

Then i decided to add some things and change the colours.

This is how my fan looks like now...

So this is my prototype.

Comments from the class:
The window can be a lighter colour so as to contrast with the black lady.
The background can be blue or another colour instead of the warm yellow/brown that i chose to have a better contrast with the fan.
I can crop it a little bit so the lady and the fan will be larger in size.

Anyway I'm probably also going to add more cherry blossoms across the fan like how most fans look like.

This is how my final prototype for assignment 1 looks like:

I didn't edit much, because everyone said it looks okay. I basically just zoomed it in so you can focus more on the fan.
